Dyan Tai
Expiratory
Please help me breathe, oh please
Help me breathe, my love
I’ll help you see
I’ll help you see, my love
From a distance feel your gaze upon me , gaze upon me
I respond to you so innocently innocently (pls help me)
Thought you knew me, it ain’t easy but u can breathe
From a distance feel u take a breath in take a breath in
I respond and let you hold your breath in hold your breath in (and I’ll help you )
See what we’ll be, we ‘re not diseased, not diseased
I know I caught you off guard
But you can breathe around me
Sweet summer day, im searching
Our memories fade, my love
It’s not a race, baby
I’ll take it with grace, my love
From afar your words they grazed on my skin grazed on my skin
Every word arranged meticulously, meticulously (please help me)
See I’m worthy, I’m at your mercy, so i can breathe
From afar I see u take a breath in take a breath in
I get close and watch you hold your breath in hold your breath in (just because it’s)
COVID19, I am not diseased, not diseased
I don’t want to try to hard
You don’t have to make it hard
I know I caught you off guard
But you can breathe around me

About the Work
Expiratory is an original musical composition written and produced by Dyan Tai as a response to COVID19 related racist incidents. The lyrics “I know I caught you off guard… but you can breathe around me” is based on Dyan’s encounter with racism when he performed at a gay dance party at the start of the COVID pandemic. The songwriting features an ethereal soundscape with the addition of the Chinese Guzheng and also sees Dyan experimenting with genderless vocals with his trademark use of falsettos.
About the Creative
Self described as the Asian empress of the gay streets of Sydney, Dyan Tai has emerged from the stages of the local drag scene. Now evolved into a pop artist, he is set to make a statement through his music and live performances. Highly regarded for his yin and yang blend of modern pop music infused with traditional Asian instrumentation, his music is sonically paired with his expansive androgynous lithe vocals. His lyrics and live performances are thoughtful and liberating; centering around his upbringing in conservative Malaysia and his quest to find freedom wherever we find ourselves.
